ANGOLA, Ind. – The University of Dubuque men's hockey team fell 5-1 to #11 Trine University in the Spartans' first NCHA road game. The Spartans will face the Thunder again on Saturday afternoon.
The Spartans (1-4, 0-3 NCHA) started the first period with two shots on goal, but the Thunder (4-1, 3-0 NCHA) found the net first in the third minute. In the seventeenth minute,
Brock Weimer connected with
Brandon Rossetti and
Kaden Dundas for an equalizing score. The goal was Weimer's first of the season and Rossetti notched his third assist in the score. The first period ended with both teams tied at one goal apiece. The Spartans killed three penalties in the second period, but the Thunder scored two even strength goals to take a 3-1 lead. Trine added two more goals to secure a 5-1 victory. The penalty boxes were full all game, as both teams combined for 16 penalties during the contest.
Nikita Borodayenko took four shots in the match, leading the Spartans.
Zach Burfoot was a bright spot for the Spartans, taking three shots and winning twelve of seventeen face-offs. Weimer scored his first goal of the season and Dundas and Rossetti both added an assist.
Cutter Lewis and
Matt Downie each tallied three blocked shots to lead the Spartans. In goal,
Beau Altman made 39 saves across 44 attempts in just under sixty minutes of game time.

The second half of the series will take place on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. (ET). Saturday's contest is the sixth match in a row the Spartans will play a nationally ranked opponent.
