DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque men's soccer team captured the win on Senior Day against Coe College. The Spartans fell behind early but rallied to score four-straight unanswered goals to rally the team to a 4-3 win over the Kohawks.
In the first half, the Spartans hit a bump in the road as Coe took a 2-0 lead. Looking to get back into the match, Eddie Papis took the ball to the edge of the box before playing in Winston Hedvall, who hit a brilliant left-footed shot to beat the keeper and make it 2-1. On a roll, Eddie Papis, three minutes after assisting a goal, ran into he box where he got his head on the end of a cross from Ebbot Bekkebraaten to score the goal that leveled the playing field at 2-2. Near the end of the half, Nic Hubbard had two saves to keep the score level heading into the break.
The Spartans came into the second half ready to roll as Hedvall had an early attempt saved. UD got a chance to take the lead as Ebbot Bekkebraaten was in a good spot in the penalty box, where he got taken down by a Kohawk defender, which resulted in a penalty being awarded. Jose Serra stepped up to take the penalty, where he sent the goalkeeper the wrong way, slotting the ball into the left side of the net. With the score at 3-2, the Spartans continued their relentless attack on the Kohawks'Â backline when a corner kick fell to Sam Matthews, who had his shot saved but only as far as Jose Serra, who scored his second goal of the game, sending it into the roof of the net. The game got close as the Kohawks scored late to make it 4-3. With less than two minutes on the clock, Nic Hubbard made a heroic save late in the match, reacting quickly to make an impressive stop. At the full-time whistle, the Spartans captured their first win of the season in a thrilling seven-goal game.
Jose Serra led the Spartans with two goals, followed by Eddie Papis with a goal and an assist. Winston Hedvall was a menace to the Kohawks defense with six shots, putting four on target and scoring once. Sam Matthews and Ebbot Bekkebraaten each registered one assist in the match. Nic Hubbard made six saves to preserve the win.
