Men's Soccer Closes the Year with 5-0 Win over Buena Vista

STORM LAKE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque men's soccer team traveled to play Buena Vista in the team's last game of the year on Tuesday. It was a cold and rainy night in Storm Lake, where the Spartans thrived with five goals to secure an impressive 5-0 win to conclude the year.

It didn't take long for UD to take control of the game as Ebbot Bekkebraaten put a corner kick into the box that jumbled around before being indirectly kicked into Buena Vista's goal by their own player. With the scoreline at 1-0, the Spartans continued to threaten with a strong chance at 31:28 from Sam Matthews, receiving a deflected ball off a teammate that went straight to his foot, where Matthews hit the ball strong, forcing a stop from the Beavers' goalie. The Spartans went into the break with a 1-0 lead, outshooting Buena Vista 11-4.

The second half saw an avalanche of goals from the Spartans as the floodgates opened with an early goal from Winston Hedvall. The ball was kicked into the box from a free kick, where it jumped around before finding Hedvall for an acrobatic finish. The next goal also came from a free kick; this time it was Luka Tomic who sent in a perfect ball to the head of Mario Meier, who placed the ball to the far side of the keeper. With the score 3-0, UD didn't let up as a fast break led to a final ball being played in by Meier to Hedvall for his second goal of the game. To make it 5-0, Lukas Sandanger got his first career goal from a corner kick played in Ebbot Bekkebraaten, capping off Sandanger's four years with the Spartans in perfect fashion. The match ended with the Spartans closing out the game with a 5-0 win.

Leading the way for the Spartans was Winston Hedvall with two goals and Mario Meier with a goal and an assist. Lukas Sandanger scored once while Ebbot Bekkebraaten and Luka Tomic each had one assist. Nic Hubbard made three saves to earn the shutout in his final game for UD.

The Spartans finished the year 2-11-4 overall and 2-4-2 in conference play. Seven seniors end their careers with the Spartans, going out on the highest possible note with a dominant win.
