DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque men's soccer team hosted the UW-Whitewater Warhawks Saturday evening in a game that ended 5-1 in favor of the Warhawks.
The Spartans started the game being pressured heavily. After the first 10 minutes of the match, UD found themselves down 3-0. The Spartans responded with some great aggressive soccer, where they got pressure on the Warhawks' back line. The result of the intensity was Sam Matthews picking up the ball in the midfield, slotting it through defenders to find Winston Hedvall, who calmly collected himself and slotted the goal past the goalkeeper. At the break, the Spartans were down 4-1.
In the second half, UD started strong with back-to-back shots from Winston Hedvall and Mario Meier to make the Warhawks' goalkeeper get low to make the saves. Hedvall had a chance at 75:24 on a penalty kick, where he was unfortunate to have the keeper guess the right way to make the save. At the full-time whistle, the Spartans fell to the Warhawks, 5-1.
Winston Hedvall led the Spartans on the night with five shots and a goal. Sam Matthews got two shots off and had a great assist on the lone goal. Mario Meier had three shots, all of which forced a save from the keeper.
