ADRIAN, Mich. – The University of Dubuque men's hockey eliminated a 4-1 deficit to pull off the 5-4 overtime upset against the seventh ranked Adrian College Bulldogs Saturday afternoon. Five different Spartans scored goals on the afternoon while three had multiple points.
Nikita Borodayenko finished the upset with a game winning overtime goal just :33 seconds into OT.
After Adrian took the early lead, the Spartans responded at 10:10 of the first of the period after a goal by
Ethan Lang with the assist from
Max Erstad and
Nikita Borodayenko. The Bulldogs took a two goal after the first period trailing 3-1. Adrian logged another goal to take a 4-1 lead after two periods. The Spartans caught fire in the third period scoring three goals. The first of the three came early in the third at the 2:20 mark as
Brandon Rossetti logged a goal with a assist from
Brett Morich and
Thomas Gazich. Seven minutes later at 9:44 of the third
Owen Hardy pulled the Spartans within one as the assists were from
Kaden Dundas and
Zach Burfoot. Late in the game the Spartans tied the game up at 17:57 on a power play goal by
Brock Weimer with the assist from Dundas and Borodayenko. The Spartans closed a 4-1 gap to force overtime all tied up 4-4.
In overtime the Spartans were ready to put the game away as
Nikita Borodayenko sealed the comeback win just 33 seconds into overtime for the game-winner.
Brock Weimer and
Kaden Dundas had the assists.
Goalie
Erik Chaffe played all 60:33 of the game while making 43 saves on the night. The Spartans won 26 faceoffs on the afternoon with
Zach Burfoot winning nine and
Nikita Borodayenko won eight.
The Spartans notched their first win of the season to improve to 1-15-3 overall and 1-9-1 in NCHA play.
