DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque men's basketball team defeated the Central College Dutch 74-67 to extend their winning streak to five games.
The Spartans and Dutch began the game at a very high pace trading baskets. After
Sunday John's three-pointer to give the Spartans a 13-10 lead, the Dutch would use their best scoring run of the night with an 11-0 run to lead 21-13. AT this point in the game, two-time A-R-C MVP, Joshua Van Gorp had nine points in the first 6:36 of the first half. The Spartans defense would do a much better job from here on out, holding Van Gorp to only six more points the rest of the way, including only one made field goal in the second half.
The Spartans would respond to the Dutch run with a 9-0 run to regain the lead at 22-21 and held the Dutch scoreless for nearly five minutes. The Spartans would leave by seven at the half. The Spartans would lead 62-46 at the halfway point of the second half for their biggest lead of the game before the Dutch made a late run to cut the Spartans lead to five before sealing the game at the free throw line.
Jacob Williams was phenomenal today both on the offensive end of the floor with a team-high 18 points and on the defensive end of the floor guarding Van Gorp. Three other Spartans finished in double figures as both
Grady Thompson and
Sunday John scored 13 points, while
Jaylin McCants had 12 points.
The Spartans led all but eight minutes tonight and their was a total of six lead changes throughout the game. The Spartans won the points off turnovers battle as well as fast break points, and bench points.
