Spartans Women Tennis Capture A-R-C Win Over Dutch 4-3

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque women's tennis team grabbed their first victory in American Rivers Conference action on Friday afternoon in spectacular fashion by claiming tie breaks in singles play against the Central College Dutch. UD lost the doubles point after winning #1 doubles in a tie break 7-6 (7-6), then lost at #2 and #3 doubles. The Spartans fought their way to a 4--3 win by claiming the first four singles and winning three third set tie-breaks to even their season to 4-4 overall.

Molly Jex and Sarah Wilde at #1 doubles opened the afternoon with a scrappy victory in a match neither team wanted to lose in a back and forth battle which extended into a tie break. The Spartans duo won the match 7-6 (7-6 in the tie-break). The #2 doubles team of Breann Kieliszewski and Jayda Floyd lost 6-2, and Adriana Benavente and partner Kadia Cole lost #3 doubles 6-3. 

Fans were able to witness some well played tennis in singles action. Molly Jex captured #1 singles quickly with a 6-1, 6-1 final. Adriana Benavente at #2 singles lost the first set 5-7, won the second set 7-5, and grabbed the win with a 6-1 third set. Sarah Wilde at #3 singles captured the first set 6-4, dropped the second 6-2, but cruised to a 6-1 third set. Jayda Floyd opened the #4 singles with a 6-2 score, she would lost the second set 6-2, and didn't drop a point in the third set, winning 6-0. Breann Kieliszewski lost #5 singles 7-5, 6-1 and Amelia Court dropped the #6 singles 6-1, 6-1.

The Spartans continue their conference schedule on Saturday, Sept. 28 at 10:00 a.m. when UD will host the Simpson College Storm at Frank Farber Tennis Courts. UD will hit the road for three A-R-C matches. UD will face the Wartburg College Knights on Wednesday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. in Waverly, Iowa. The Spartans will face their longest trip of the fall when they make their way to Lincoln, Neb. to play the Nebraska Wesleyan University Prairiewolves on Friday, Oct. 4 at 4:00 p.m. before ending homecoming week in Storm Lake, Iowa against the Buena Vista University Beavers on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 10:00 a.m.

The A-R-C Individual Tournament hosted by Central College begins onn Friday, Oct. 11 at 8:00 a.m. in Pella, Iowa.
