Floss's Penalty Kick Lift Spartans over Saint Mary's

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque men's soccer team was back in action on Saturday afternoon as the Spartans took on the Cardinals of Saint Mary's University. It was a back and forth game with both teams getting great looks on goal, making it a high paced game. The Spartans made great defensive plays down the stretch, with the difference being a first half penalty kick by Zach Floss to prevail the Spartans to a 1-0 victory.

After a great defensive effort by the Spartans in the first 30 minutes of game time, the Spartans were able to find an opening in the box allowing Gavin Wooldridge to draw a penalty kick inside the box. On the penalty kick, Floss would convert the penalty shot to give the Spartans the lead.

As it has been most of the season, the second half was led by the Spartans defense as they held numerous Saint Mary's attacks down the stretch. Goalkeeper Matt Marchiori made six saves on the day to give him his third shutout at home. He has yet to allow a goal at home this season and it was the Spartans third 1-0 win on the season. The Spartans improve to 3-1-1 on the season.
