DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque baseball team played the first two of the three game series against their cross-town rival Loras College. The Spartans would mount a comeback in game one, but fall in extra innings, 8-9. In game two, the Spartans worked to comeback from a five run deficit, but fell yet again 8-10.
Game 1
Luke Burgos singled down the right field line with the bases loaded in the opening inning of game one scoring the first two runs of the game for the Spartans. The Duhawks then followed up with five runs in the bottom of the first as every run would be unearned. The Spartans would gain another run back in the top of the second as
Daniel Maller hit a solo home run. The Duhawks scored the next two runs in the fourth and sixth innings to extend their lead to 3-7.
The Spartans began their comeback in the seventh inning by scoring three runs off an
Aidan Elfering single and a throwing error by the Duhawks. Heading into their final three outs of the game,
Micah O'Neal and
Daniel Maller both got on base and then
Colin Husko double to left center to score both to tie the game at 7-7. Elfering moved Husko to third off a single which was followed up by
JD Schaffer hitting a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Husko to take an 8-7 lead. The Duhawks scored a run in the bottom of the ninth to send the game to extras where they would ultimately win the game in the bottom of the tenth.
Husko and Elfering both led the Spartans at the plate going 3-5. Husko and Burgos each recorded 2 RBI's.
Maguire Fitzgerald started on the mound as six Spartans came in for relief throughout the game.
Game 2
In the second game of the doubleheader,
Kyle Radi drove in the games first run off an RBI double to left field. Loras would go on to score the next six runs over the course of two innings extending their lead to 1-6. In a similar style to game one, the Spartans worked their way back scoring three in the sixth inning and one in the seventh to get to within 5-6 of the Duhawks.
The bottom of the seventh the Duhawks scored four more runs to lead by five runs yet again. The Spartans had one last push to get back into the game adding three runs in the top of the eighth, but that would be all the Spartans managed, falling in game two 8-10.
Five Spartans recorded multiple hits in the second game (Maller, Husko, Elfering, Radi, and Fitzgerald). Maller added two RBI's in the top of the eighth to lead the Spartans. Rosas recorded the loss in his first outing of 2024 as
Aiden Sullivan,
Christian Battista, and
Anthony Scanlon came in to pitch in relief.
The Spartans move to 17-10 overall and 6-6 in conference play.
