STORM LAKE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque softball team had their bats finally come alive against the Buena Vista University Beavers on Monday as the Spartans picked up their first conference wins of the season with a five inning 14-6 victory in game one followed by a 7-5 extra inning victory in game two.
In game one the Spartans trailed early by a run through three innings, but when the Spartans came up to the plate in the top of the fourth inning, the bats exploded for 10 runs on seven hits in the inning that was highlighted by a
Megan Leick grand slam which would be the first homerun of her collegiate career. The Spartans would be able to continue to add a few runs in the next few innings and would run rule the Beavers in game one.
The Spartans got on the board in game two in the fourth inning with a
Katie Hayes homerun to center field and
Audrey Morris would follow suite in the fifth inning with a long ball of her own. With the Spartans leading 5-0 through 5 1/2 innings, the Beavers made a rally in the sixth scoring four runs and then was able to tie it in the seventh inning to force extra innings. In the eighth inning the Spartans were able to regroup and score twice to win by a 7-5 final to sweep the Beavers.
Numerous Spartans had great days at the plate with
Bella Allison going 6-9 at the plate and adding two stolen bases. Leick finished two games batting 4-7 with her 4 RBI's. As the designated hitter,
Chloe Hild was also 4-7 batting with a run batted in.
Tricia Sporaa had a great game one batting 3-4 with three RBI's and had two extra base hits.
Ally Gullette picked up her second win of the season on the mound after coming in for relief for the final three innings of game one.
Jaelyn Blakemore pitched all but one out of game two and won her third game of the season allowing only two earned runs on nine hits.
The Spartans move to 8-23 overall and 2-12 in conference play.
