DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque grabbed game by a 9-7 final and lost the nightcap 1-9 in six innings in non-conference play against the Augustana College (Ill.) Vikings on Wednesday afternoon.
In game one, UD trailed going into their final at bat and needed some heroics. The Spartans delivered for head coach
Andrea Bombace in amazing fashion. UD opened the bottom of the seventh inning with a double to left-center by
Amber Wisely and would steal third.
Katie Hayes walked and
Audrey Morris pitch ran for Hayes and stole second.
Anna Luczak singled to left field and Wisley scored on the play, slicing the Vikings lead to just a run.
Zoe Connell pitch ran for Luczak and stole second putting runners at third and second for
Kaitlyn Powell. Powell delivered with a three RBI homerun deep over the right field wall to end the game in spectacular fashion with UD collecting the 9-7 win.
Powell led the offense after hitting 3-4 plate appearances, scored twice, and led with teammate
Chloe Hild with three RBI's. Hild homered to centerfield in the fifth inning and was 2-4 at the plate and scored a run.
UD scored nine runs off 14 hits and committed an error, the Vikings scored seven runs off 13 hits and played errorless.
Jaelyn Blakemore earned the victory after tossing the final three innings. She allowed no earned runs and struck out one.
In the second game, UD grabbed one run off five hits as the Vikings ended the game early with nine runs off 12 hits as both squads failed to commit an error.
Ciaran Rigby took the loss after throwing six innings and facing 35 batters.
The Spartans host Loras College in their final doubleheader of the season on Friday, May 3 at 2:00 p.m. when the host Senior Day and Cancer Awareness Day at the UD Softball Field.
