Silva & Todd's Record-Breaking Night Sends Spartans Past Falcons

DUBUQUE, Iowa - It was a record breaking night for the University of Dubuque men's lacrosse team as Sam Todd broke the single season goals and points records, while Giovanni Silva broke the career goals record on the final Spartans goal of the game. The Spartans fought off a late comeback by the Concordia University (WI) Falcons to win by a final score of 11-10 in the last non-conference game of the season.

The Spartans had not played a game in 10 days and in the beginning of tonight's contest, you could tell the Spartans had to shake off some rust as they trailed by three goals (1-4) after the opening quarter. The Spartans would start to settle into their game in the second quarter and with 8:26 remaining in the quarter Aidan Culligan assisted Todd's 42nd goal of the season, setting the new single season goals program record.

After trailing by one goal at the halftime break, the Spartans shutout the Falcons in the third quarter and was able to score three goals to take a 7-5 lead after three. When the Spartans took their first lead of the game with 12:38 left in the third, the goal scored by Todd might have been the goal of the season as he wrapped the shot behind his back and scored past the Falcons goalie.

Todd began the fourth quarter with yet another record broken with an unassisted goal with 12:50 left in the game to become the new single season points leader in program history. Todd broke Silva's record from last season and now has 67 points and counting this season.

Silva saved the best and most important Spartans goal for last as he wanted to put his name back into the record book as the top goal scorer in UD Men's Lacrosse history with 105 career goals and counting in only his Junior season. That goal by Silva paid huge dividends because with the Spartans leading 11-6 with just over five minutes remaining, the Falcons scored four goals down the stretch and nearly came back to tie the game.

The Spartans finished with four multiple point scorers tonight with Todd leading the way with six points. Todd and Silva each dished out three assists. Nolan Nagy picked up his eighth win of the season securing 13 saves in goal.

The Spartans move to 8-5 overall on the season.

Up Next
The Spartans have their biggest match up of the season on Saturday, April 20 when they face Lake Forest College on the road starting at 1:00 p.m. The winner of the game will clinch at least a share of the Midwest Lacrosse Conference regular season title and more than likely the #1 seed and hosting the MLC Tournament.

The Spartans won the conference back in 2022 beating Lake Forest, while most recently Lake Forest defeated the Spartans in 2023.
