DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque Spartans softball team hosted a non-conference doubleheader as they welcomed in the Eagles from the University of Wisconsin La Crosse on Monday afternoon. The Spartans lost game one by a score of 1-11 in six innings and then fell 1-9 in the second game.
The Eagles scored a run in the opening inning and later tacked on a run in the third and fourth inning as the Spartans trailed 0-3. In the early innings, the Spartans had opportunities with runners in scoring position but left a combined four runners stranded in the second and third inning. After a scoreless fourth, the Eagles put up a five run fifth inning as the Spartans deficit increased to eight.
Kaitlyn Powell led off the bottom half with a double and advanced to third on a single from
Bella Allison.
Katie Hayes drove in the Spartans run with an RBI single to center field.
Bailey Ford led the Spartans at the plate with two hits while five other Spartans recorded a hit.
Ally Gullette got the start on the mound and pitched 4.2 innings allowing six earned runs while striking out two batters in the loss.
Ciaran Rigby entered in relief and finished the game surrendering four runs through 1.1 innings with one strikeout.
Game two of the afternoon the Spartans grabbed the early lead with a run in the first inning capitalizing on an Eagles error as Powell came around to score. The Spartans held on to their one run advantage until the fourth inning as the Eagles scored two to take the lead. The Eagles tacked on two more insurance runs in the sixth and then added five more runs in the seventh as the Spartans lost 1-9.
Powell, Allison, Hayes,
Jordyn Wogomon, and
Anna Luczak all reached first base with a single.
Jaelyn Blakemore started game two and pitched a complete seven innings. Blakemore gave up four earned runs and struck out two of the 37 batters faced.

The Spartans are now 6-21 overall and will travel west to Nebraska Wesleyan University this weekend for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 20.
