PELLA, Iowa - The University of Dubuque baseball team split the two-game doubleheader today against the Central College Dutch to take the series on the road. The Dutch took game one with a 0-4 shutout and the Spartans answered with a 6-3 victory in game two.
The fifth inning of game two was the best inning of the day for the Spartans as they broke open a 0-0 tie in the fifth inning with five runs.
Daniel Maller got the Spartans on the board by hitting a double with the bases loaded scoring two runs.
Aidan Elfering then followed up Maller with a double of his own scoring two more runs to make it 4-0 Spartans.
Jake Cekander added the fifth run of the inning with a single to right field. In the sixth inning, Elfering got his third RBI of the game with another double extending the lead to 6-0. The Dutch added three runs down the stretch, but couldn't get any closer.
Charlie Jaeger continued his dominance on the mound as he went 6.0 innings allowing only four hits and striking out nine batters.
Christian Battista got the save for the Spartans in the final three innings of the game.
Colin Husko had a four hit day against the Dutch getting a pair of hits in each game. Cekander had a three-hit day and Elfering led the team with three RBI's.
The Spartans move to 19-11 overall and 8-7 in A-R-C play.
