Baseball Sweeps Weekend Home Opener over St. Norbert

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque baseball team swept their weekend home opening three game series over the St. Norbert College Green Knights winning Saturday's doubleheader by scores of 8-4, 5-0, and Sunday's lone game 5-0. New Spartans coach Dan Spain improved to 9-2 overall and 3-0 at home

March entered Dan W. Runkle Baseball Field like a roaring lion on Sunday with warm, strong southerly winds 20-35 mph and wind gusts nearing 50 mph which played havoc with pop ups. Starting pitcher Charlie Jaeger was locked in and and tossed 7.1 nearly perfect innings. He struck out 11 batters, walked just one, and allowed a pair of singles in his home debut. Patrick Rafferty came in for .2 innings of relief and fanned both batters. Aiden Sullivan pitched the final inning and forced the Green Knights into a pair of ground outs and a foul out to end the afternoon. The trio faced just 31 batters in the outing.

UD scored five runs off 10 hits and played errorless. The two teams played scoreless through five innings, the Spartans put two runs in the bottom of the sixth and seventh and added another run in the bottom of the eighth and would leave six runners on base in the win.

Kyle Radi led the offense by going 2-4 at the plate with an RBI. Aidan Elfering grabbed a double and an RBI, JD Schaffer and Matt Wolverton both hit triples in back-to-back at bats. Luke Burgos, Kyle Radi, and Ixander Colon all stole a base for UD.

The Spartans (9-2 overall) will travel to play the Aurora University Spartans at 2:00 p.m. on March 15 at the Wheaton College Invitational in Wheaton, Ill. The next day, March 16, they will face Saint Mary's University (Minn.) at 11:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. will play the hosts, the Wheaton College Thunder.
