Spartans Baseball Open Easter Weekend Against the Knights

Dubuque, Iowa - The University of Dubuque baseball enjoyed a partly sunny, warmer contest on Good Friday when they hosted the Wartburg College Knights in American Rivers Conference play. The Knights jumped out to an early lead before the Spartans cut into the lead after scoring a run in the second and fourth innings. The final three innings both teams were held scoreless. UD lost by a 2-6 final in the first of the three game series at Dan W. Runkle Baseball Field.

Throwing out the first pitch today was Theo McWhite, father of former Spartan Austin McWhite. Austin was an aviation student-athlete for the Spartans and was a member of the ARMY ROTC program on campus. Following graduation, he obtained the rank of 2nd Lieutenant in the United States ARMY. He tragically lost his life in a motorcycle accident on July 16, 2018 at the age of 23. His legacy continues to impact many through the Austin McWhite Foundation Scholarships which are dedicated to Aviation students who best exemplify the leadership and courage Austin lived by each and every day.

His parents, Theo and Sha'ron McWhite were in attendance to honor this year's scholarship recipients of Luke Burgos, Christian Battista, Joshua Kupetz, Shae Buskohl, and Josh Rogde. The foundation also donated a $1,000 check to the University of Dubuque Baseball Team in Austin's honor.

The Spartans scored two runs off seven hits while the Knights scored six runs in eight hits and both teams made two errors each. Daniel Maller led the Spartans offense and finished 2-3 with two runs scored and secured the team's only double of the game. Colin Husko was 2-4 with an RBI. The Spartans left 10 runners on base and the Knights would strand seven on base.

Johnny Blake took the loss after throwing six complete innings and allowing five earned runs in eight hits. He struck out eight and walked two of the 30 batters faced. Parick Rafferty came in for relief in the final three innings and walked one while striking out four of the 10 batters faced.

The two teams continue the series on Saturday, March 30 beginning at 12:00 p.m. for the A-R-C doubleheader.
