Baseball Splits Doubleheader Against Knights

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque baseball team continued their American Rivers Conference schedule on Saturday by hosting the Wartburg College Knights in a doubleheader. The Spartans lost game one 0-4, but rallied in the bottom on the ninth and loaded the bases before a line out to centerfield ended the contest. In game two, the Spartans hit their way to a four run lead in the first inning and never looked back in a dominating 15-1 victory in seven innings.

In the opener, Wartburg broke open a scoreless game in the third inning by crossing a pair of runs across the plate on a homerun. They added a run in the fourth on a single and a run in the sixth on an error. The Knights scored four runs off 10 hits and committed five errors. UD grabbed six singles and committed one error. Daniel Maller went 2-4 at the plate and was left on base both times.

Aidan Elfering threw six innings allowed three earned runs, struck out eight and walked a pair of Knights. Christian Battista pitched the final three innings and struck out five of the nine batters faced.

In the second game, UD scored 15 runs off 11 hits while holding the Knights to a lone run off three hits. Jake Cekander was a perfect 4-4 at the plate which included a grandslam homerun in the first inning and a double later in the game. He led everyone with eight RBI's in the nightcap. Aidan Elfering went 1-3 with four RBI's including a three run homer to left field in the bottom of the fifth. Eight Spartans ended the contest with at least one hit and UD left six runners on base. UD stranded 10 runners on base.

Shae Buskohl went 5.1 innings for the victory, allowed one earned run and three hits while striking out four. Joshua Kupetz went .2 to end the sixth with a walk and a strikeout and Aiden Sullivan threw the seventh and struck out two and walked one to end the game early.

The Spartans will host Loras College on Tuesday afternoon at Dan W. Runkle Baseball Field beginning at 3:00 p.m.
