Spartans Baseball Overcome by Kohawks Offense at Home

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque baseball team lost to the Coe College Kohawks in game one of the doubleheader 2-14 in eight innings and lost the nightcap 0-3.

Delayed by a day due to weather, the Spartans hosted the Coe College Kohawks on Wednesday and battled mother nature in a cold, windy afternoon on Dan. W. Runkle Baseball Field. The Spartans struggled to cool down the hot bats of the Kohawks who scored 14 runs off 14 hits while UD finished with two runs off six hits in the opener.

Charlie Jaeger took the loss after tossing the opening six innings and allowing three runs off five hits while striking out six of the 26 batters faced. Maguire Fitzgerald and Daniel Maller each hit a double in the loss. Maller was 2-3 at the plate, scored a run and was left on base twice.

Maguire Fitzgerald started game two on the mound and threw a complete nine inning game, allowed just three earned runs while striking out eight Kohawks, and faced 33 batters.

The Kohawks scored twice in the opening inning, added a run in the fourth off a single to left field. They scored three runs off five hits and committed two errors. The Spartans were held scoreless after grabbing three hits and left 10 runners on base. Justin Hausner had the teams lone double and Micah O'Neal stole two bases. UD turned one double play in game two.

The Spartans will enjoy a break on Thursday before returning to Dan W. Runkle Baseball Field on Good Friday, March 29 when the Wartburg College Knights travel to Dubuque in a nine inning game scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. start. UD will host the Knights on the following day, Saturday, March 30 in a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 p.m.
