Baseball Takes First Two Games Over St. Norbert

DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque Spartans baseball team played their first games of the season on their home turf at Dan W. Runkle Baseball Field. The Spartans would win both games as they defeated St. Norbert College Green Knights by scores of 8-4 and 5-0.

In the first game Johnny Blake got the start for the Spartans and surrendered three runs in the first frame. The Spartans would even the score at 3-3 after a two-run RBI double off the bat of Colin Husko and an RBI single from Aidan Elfering in the second inning. In the middle innings, Blake settled in having his way with the Green Knights striking out a season-high 11 batters through six innings for his second win of the season. The Spartans took the lead 5-4 from a Maguire Fitzgerald RBI single and then added three more insurance runs in the later innings off the bat of Kyle Radi including a two-run double. Anthony Scanlon came in relief and recorded his first save of the season tossing three innings of scoreless ball and fanning six batters.

The Spartans racked up 14 hits from eight different players. Luke Burgos led the team with three hits followed by Ixander Colon, Husko, Elfering, and Radi with two hits each.

In the second game, the Spartans blanked the Green Knights 5-0 behind the efforts of Aidan Elfering and Shae Buskohl. Elfering only allowed four hits and struck out seven in a near perfect seven innings for the win. Buskohl finished the last two innings punching out two of the seven batters faced. JD Schaffer delivered the Spartans first run of the game on an RBI double. The Spartans tacked on two more runs in the third off RBI singles from Jake Cekander and Colon. Fitzgerald drove in the game's last run on another RBI single as the Spartans shutout the Green Knights 5-0.

The Spartans continued to swing the bats well as they tallied 11 hits. Nine different Spartans recorded a hit as Blake led the charge with three hits including a triple.
