CLERMONT, Fla. – The University of Dubuque Spartans softball team continued their 10-game spring break trip with another doubleheader. The Spartans won their first game against Russell Sage College Gators 6-4 before losing to Benedictine University Eagles 11-2.
Through the first inning of play the Spartans found themselves down 1-0. Quickly the Spartans responded with a run in the second inning despite recording no hits. After
Jordyn Wogomon reached safely on an error,
Bailey Ford drove home the Spartans first run of the game on an RBI ground out. In the third inning, the Spartans platted five runs as the offense exploded for seven hits. All five runs were driven in on RBI singles off the bats of
Grace Stevenson,
Bella Como,
Chloe Hild, Ford, and
Bella Allison.The five run cushion was enough as
Jaelyn Blakemore and
Ciaran Rigby as they kept the Gators bats in check securing a 6-4 victory.
Blakemore got the start and tossed three innings off two run ball while striking out three. Rigby entered in relief and finished the game with seven punch outs in four innings to earn the win.
In the second game of the afternoon, the Spartans quickly fell behind 6-0 through three innings.
Tricia Sporaa drove in the Spartans only two runs of the game as she lined a single into right field. In the last at bats for the Eagles, they tacked on five more runs as the Spartans fell 11-2.
Paige Manning took the mound and pitched 2 2/3 innings giving up six runs in the loss.
Kayleen Sebo tossed the final 4 1/3 innings allowing four earned runs on five hits.
The Spartans are now 3-3 overall.
