Men's Hockey Completes Sweep Over Lake Forest

Box Score LAKE FOREST, Ill. - The University of Dubuque men's hockey program created history by notching their first conference sweep against the Lake Forest College Foresters with a 3-1 victory on Saturday night. 

More than halfway through the first period the score was knotted at 0-0. The Foresters broke the scoreless tie with a goal in the last two minutes of the opening period as the Spartans trailed 1-0. In the second period, the Spartans were on the attack as they ripped off a team high 13 shots on goal. At 11:34 of the second, James Eng evened the game at 1-1 with his third goal of the season as he connected on a pass from Josh King. A few minutes later, the Spartans took advantage from a Lake Forest penalty as Max Messier scored his fourth goal of the season at 15:37 of the second period assisted by King, and Chris Beyer. Heading into the final period of play the Spartans led 2-1.

Five minutes into action, the Spartans went on another power play and wasted no time scoring in eight seconds to extend their cushion with a 3-1 lead as Ethan Lang notched his second goal of the season off assists from Messier and King. Defensively, the Spartans successfully killed off three penalties in the period to secure the win. 

The Spartans tallied a total of 23 shots on goal led by Patrick Toomey with four followed by Eng along with Nick Wieben with three each. Offensively, the Spartans executed on the power play opportunity scoring twice in four chances. The Spartans won 22-53 faceoffs as Toomey finished with nine wins and Jake Lamberty with five. A total of 12 different Spartans blocked at least one shot for a total of 15 blocked shots. Spartans goalkeeper, Chris Curr earned his third win of the year posting 28 saves (9,9,10).

The Spartans will conclude the regular season next weekend at home when they take on St. Norbert College in a two-game series. The first game is scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, February 9th.
