Softball Splits with Eastern on Day 2 of The Spring Games

CLERMONT, Fla. - Day two of the 2024 Spring Games featured a doubleheader against Eastern University. The Spartans dropped the first game 10-3 before bouncing back with a 12-2 victory in game two.

Eastern put up seven runs in the first inning to take an early lead. The Spartans got two runs back in the bottom half as Katie Hayes and Kaitlyn Powell recorded RBI singles. In the bottom of the sixth the Spartans platted one more run off an RBI single by Bailey Ford. In the final inning, Eastern tacked on one more run as the Spartans lost 10-3. Paige Manning got the start and suffered the loss as she tossed 2/3 of an inning surrendering seven runs. Ally Gullette came in relief and pitched a solid 6 1/3 innings only giving two runs while fanning one batter. 

Game two the Spartans flipped the script as they jumped all over Eastern pilling up 16 hits from 10 different players in a decisive 12-2 win. The Spartans did most of their damage in the early innings as they put up a three spot in the first and second innings, and added two more runs in the third. Hayes continued to swing a hot bat as she went 3-4 including two doubles to finish with five RBIs. Bella Allison and Powell each finished with three hits as well. Tricia Sporaa drove in runs on the afternoon with a sacrifice fly, hit by pitch and an RBI single. Kayleen Sebo got the nod for the Spartans and tossed her first career complete game earning her first victory of the season. In seven innings, Sebo only allowed one earned run on four hits while striking out two.

The Spartans will continue play in Florida as they take on Russell Sage College and Benedictine University tomorrow. The first game is scheduled to start at 9:45 a.m. on March 1st.
