Baseball Drops Final Game in Florida

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The University of Dubuque Spartans baseball team wrapped up their final game of the spring break trip in Florida. The Spartans played the Rose-Hulman Fightin' Engineers and lost the tightly contested game by a final 5-6.
 
The Spartans were first to crack through on the scoreboard in the second inning as JD Schaffer brought home Ixander Colon on a sacrifice fly. In the third, the Spartans platted another run as Kyle Radi scored on a wild pitch. Rose-Hulman responded in the bottom half, tying the game at 2-2. In Schaffer's second at bat, the third baseman sent a towering ball over the fence for his first homerun as a Spartan. In the fifth inning, the Spartans platted two more runs as Colin Husko reached home on a wild pitch. Due up next, Daniel Maller lined an RBI triple to left center as the Spartans led 5-3. After a scoreless sixth, Rose-Hulman recorded three runs on three hits in the seventh as the Spartans trailed 6-5. The Spartans were unable to plate a run in the last two innings of the game as the Spartans dropped the finale in Florida.
 
Eight different Spartans finished with at least one hit including two hits from Aidan Elfering. Maguire Fitzgerald got the nod and pitched three innings giving up two earned runs and striking out six. Shae Buskohl came in relief and tossed 3 2/3 innings surrendering three runs in the loss while fanning five batters.
 
The Spartans finished the 2024 Russmatt Central Florida Invitational with a 3-2 record.
