Box Score MEQUON, Wis. - The University of Dubuque women's hockey team showed defensive determination on the road against Concordia University, but came up short in a 3-0 opening weekend loss.
CU struck early, scoring just 1:07 into the game to take a 1-0 lead. The Spartans responded with 10 shots on goal in the first period and were led by Alexandria Simmons who had two. Savannah Wuitschick kept the Spartans within striking distance, recording 14 saves in the opening frame.Â
Both teams battled back and forth in the second period with neither squad able to find the back of the net. Savannah Wuitschick was a standout once again, adding 22 saves to her tally as the Spartans posted seven more shots on goal by even different Spartans.
In the final period, CU capitalized opportunities, by scoring two goals to secure a 3-0 victory. Savannah Wuitschick played all 60:00 minutes in goal and will sleep well tonight after stopping 47 shots in the loss.
UD won 15 faceoffs and were led by the duo of Ashleigh Eldridge with five and teammate Pacey Lannet with five winners. Three Spartans finished the night with three shots each: Pacey Lannet, Chloe Byma, and Alexandria Simmons.
The two teams return to action on Saturday, with puck to be dropped at 4:00 p.m. at Ozaukee Ice Center.
