SUPERIOR, Wis. – The University of Dubuque men's hockey team competed in the opening game of the UW-Superior Showdown presented by Subway in a neutral game against the Saints from the College of St. Scholastica. The Spartans netted three goals by two different scorers and had two power play goals, but fell short to the Saints 5-3 in game one.
After a power play scored by the Saints in the first period the Spartans used a power play opportunity of their own as
Zach Burfoot netted his third goal on the season with assists from
Jack Paweski and
Nikita Borodayenko. The Spartans trailed 2-1 after the first period. The Spartans were back on the board with a goal by
Nikita Borodayenko 58 seconds into the second period, with assists from
Max Erstad and
Ethan Lang. Borodayenko netted his second of the goal in the third period on the power play off passes from
Zach Burfoot and
Nick Wieben. It was Borodayenko's first multiple goal game as a Spartan and now has four goals on the season.
The Spartans had 34 shots on goal, went 30/62 on faceoffs and had 14 blocked shots with
Eric Hudec and Brandon Rosetti leading the Spartans with two each.
Ryan Piros logged 58:49 of ice time while having 40 saves on the night.
