ANGOLA, Ind. - The University of Dubuque women's hockey team picked up their first points in the NCHA standings on Saturday after a 3-3 decision that led to a 1-0 win for the Spartans in the best of three shootout with the Trine University Thunder.
The scoring didn't take long in this one as
Lauren Jeffery netted a goal just 47 seconds into the game off assists from
Pacey Lannet and
Malia Tetreault. The Spartans then quickly doubled their lead as
Madigan Depuydt scored her first collegiate goal at the 3:17 mark of the first period off passes from
Aleah Giddings and Tetreault.
Trine responded with back-to-back goals in the second half of the first period and doing so in only 1:37 of game clock.
Libby Plath would end the Thunder run with a goal to give the Spartans a 3-2 lead with just under four minutes left in the opening period. Giddings and
Evie Daly had the assists on the Spartans third goal of the game.Â
The scoring would subside for much of the rest of the game, but the Thunder had the equalizer at the 10:12 mark of the third period to send the game to overtime. Neither team scored in the overtime period, but the first career goal for Tetreault in the shootout would be the only goal of the shootout, giving the Spartans the extra conference point.Â
The Spartans gain two points in the NCHA standings and sit at 0-4-1 on the year and 0-3-1 in conference play.
