WAUWATOSA, Wis. - The University of Dubuque women's basketball team suffered their first loss of the season 67-51 at the hands of the UW-Oshkosh Titans who was ranked No. 8 in the preseason D3hoops.com Top 25 poll.
The Spartans are taking part in the Paul F. Knueppel Classic which is being hosted by Wisconsin Lutheran College at the Time of Grace Center in a two-day round robin style tournament.
The Spartans fell behind early to the ranked Titans after they shot 50% from the field to lead 20-12 after the first 10 minutes. The Titans managed to hit seven of their 10 three-pointers in the first half and held the Spartans to only nine shot attempts in the second quarter, to lead 35-22 at the half.
With the game still plenty in reach, the Spartans cut the Titans lead to 12 on two separate occasions in the third quarter. The Titans managed to get their lead back up to 17 with just over five minutes to play, but after a 9-0 run in just over a two minute span saw the lead shrink to eight. The Titans would end the game on a 8-0 run and held the Spartans scoreless over the final 2:50 of the game.
Scoring was spread out on the night for the Spartans and was led by
Taylor Martin who had nine off the bench on 4-5 shooting. This is Martin's first time leading the team in scoring in her career.
Morgan Hawkins and
Isabella Tierney had eight each with Hawkins collecting eight rebounds as well.
The Spartans dominated the points in the paint outscoring the Titans 38-18 and produced five more points off the bench. the key difference in the game was from beyond the arc as the Titans made 10 threes on the night and held the Spartans 1-8 from the arc.
The Spartans move to 1-1 overall on the season.
