DUBUQUE, Iowa – The University of Dubuque men's hockey opened up home conference play Friday night against the 13th ranked Trine University Thunder at ImOn Arena in the first game of a back-to-back doubleheader. The Spartans put together their best offensive output on the young season scoring four goals by four different Spartans.
UD got out to an early lead 8:50 into the game when freshman Zach Burfoot notched his first career collegiate goal as Parker James and Nikita Borodayenko logged the assists. The second Spartans goal came at 7:29 of the second period as sophomore Nolan Underwood scored his first goal as a Spartan while shorthanded on a breakaway play. Jack Paweski logged his second goal of the season minutes later at 9:32 of the second period off the assist from Owen Hardy and goalie Ryan Piros to give the Spartans their second breakout one on one opportunity to go into the second intermission up 3-1.
After Trine scored back-to-back goals in the third to tie the game 3-3, the Spartans answered quickly as Owen Hardy scored his second goal of the season on year as the Spartans quickly answered to go back up 4-3. Trine eventually answered with just over a minute left to force overtime. After a five-minute sudden death overtime stalemate, game would go down as a draw as each team logs one point in the conference standings. To determine a winner the teams went into a shootout and Trine came out on top 2-1.
As a team, the Spartans finished the evening with four goals on 19 shots, had a faceoff percentage of 46.2 percent and had seven blocked shots. Freshman goalie Ryan Piros played 65 minutes of game action and logged 38 saves on the night.
The Spartans are now 0-4-1 overall and 0-2-1 in conference play.
