Spartans Down Norse at Home

DUBUQUE, Iowa - With only a handful of home games left, the University of Dubuque Spartans took the court against the Norse of Luther College. The Spartans came in looking to split the regular season series after suffering a loss to Luther on the road earlier this season. At half the Spartans led by three and eventually extended their lead as the Spartans won 76-64.

Both teams came out of the gates scorching hot as the Spartans and Norse shot over 50% from the floor in the first quarter. Through the first 10 minutes of play the Spartans led 28-22. Offense continued at a premium throughout the second quarter as the Spartans shot 43% and the Norse shot at 50%. A three by Tabria Thomas gave the Spartans their largest lead of the half at 42-35 with three minutes remaining. The Norse responded with back-to-back threes to make it a one possession game as the Spartans held a three point advantage (44-41) at the break.

In the third quarter both teams cooled down offensively as the Spartans outscored the Norse 14-9. In the final minute of the third, City Figlinski and Thomas each connected from beyond the arc as the Spartans took a 58-50 lead into the fourth. As the Norse started to chip away at the deficit, Madi Petersen and Teal shut down the opportunity of any comeback by knocking down key three pointers. Down the stretch the Spartans closed out the deal with a 76-64 victory.

The Spartans got contributions from across the board as five players finished with double figures. Karsen Kershner led the way with 14 points and six boards, Teal with 13 points including 3-4 from three-point land, Thomas with 12 points, Figlinski added 10 points, and Hawkins finished with her first double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds. The Spartans shot the ball at an effective clip of 43% and made a season-high nine threes.

The Spartans extended their winning streak to three games and are now 13-7 overall and 7-4 in conference play.
