Men's Hockey Lose Contested Battle at Concordia University

MEQUON, Wis. - Coming off the program's first win in school history, the University of Dubuque Spartans took the ice at the Ozaukee Ice Center for game two of the season series against the Falcons of Concordia University (Wis.). The Spartans struck first with a goal in the second period. Heading into the third and final period the score was knotted at 2-2, but a late goal by the Falcons topped the Spartans 3-2 in the loss.

Through the first period of play, neither team was able to find the back of the goal. The Spartans tacked on 12 shots while the Falcons ripped off 21 shots. Freshman, Max Erstad wasted no time scoring his first collegiate goal at 1:05 in the second period to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead. Tyler Alexander and Brandon Rossetti were credited with the assists. A few minutes later the Falcons got on the board with a goal to even the score at 1-1. At 10:36 Josh King broke the tie with an unassisted goal netting his third of the season. The Spartans held onto the lead for the remainder of the period until the Falcons scored a goal in the last minute of the second period. 

Heading into the final period the score was tied 2-2. The Spartans only attempted six shots compared to the Falcons 13. The final shot for the Falcons resulted in a goal at 19:04 to defeat the Spartans 3-2. 

On the afternoon the Spartans fired off 28 shots while King led the offensive attack with five shots, along with Patrick Donnelly and Nick Wieben with three each. Patrick Toomey led the team with seven faceoff wins followed closely behind Max Messier with five. 

Goalkeeper Chris Curr played 59:20 in the loss. Curr recorded 52 saves on the day including 21 saves in the first period.

The Spartans will return to ImOn Arena on Friday, January 19th as they take on Lawrence University. Puck drop is scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m.
