Women's soccer picks up first victory of the season with 4-1 decision over Pointers

DUBUQUE, Iowa - In their third game of the season, the University of Dubuque women's soccer team was able to get into the win column with a decisive 4-1 victory over the UW-Stevens Point Pointers on Wednesday afternoon.

After putting up two scoreless games, the Spartans offense came to life on Oyen Field which got started just over two minutes into the game when Samantha Scodeller had a corner kick that went right off Emerson Wilson's header and found the right leg of Emma Kober for the first goal of the season and a 1-0 lead. Offense would get quiet for the rest of the first half as the Spartans maintained their one goal lead.

Once the second half got underway, the scoring would come in a hurry. The Pointers knotted the game at 1-1 just over a minute into the second half, but it was the Kober and Wilson connection yet again 2:30 later as Kober found the back of the net off the great pass from Wilson for the 2-1 lead. The Spartans would then get two unassisted goals in a matter of a minute as Autumn Huntington would score her first collegiate goal and Scodeller added another to give the Spartans a commanding 4-1 lead with 35 minutes left. The Spartans maintained the lead throughout the rest of the game with stout defense and came away with the victory.

Karissa Cruz also picked up her first victory of her collegiate career in goal for the Spartans grabbing four saves in 90 minutes. The Spartans managed eight shots on goal in 15 shot attempts and had four corner opportunities.
