GRINNELL, Iowa - Tuesday evening the University of Dubuque men's soccer team notched their first win of the season against in state non-conference opponent Grinnell College Pioneers. The Spartans shutout the Pioneers 3-0 to capture the victory.
Through one half of play, neither team could get anything going offensively. The Pioneers had two more opportunities with eight shots in the first half compared to the Spartans six. Both teams entered halftime at an even stalemate 0-0.Â
Just twenty seconds into the second half the Spartans struck first with a goal from
Liam Persson off a pass from
Gavin Wooldridge. The first career goal for the native from Sweden gave the Spartans a 1-0 advantage. After a few possessions from both teams, the Spartans found the back of the goal again. In the 65th minute,
Carson Kowalski netted his first career goal off an assist from
Drew Wisdom. The Spartans were not done as three minutes later Kowalski scored his second goal of the game as Wooldridge also recorded his second assist of the night extending the Spartan lead to three. The Mundelein, Ill. native recorded his first multiple goal game of the season, just one shy of a hat trick.Â
Defensively, the Spartans were busy as
Lukas Sandanger and
Elia Desario play the full 90 minutes while
Zach Floss played 86 minutes. Goalkeeper,
Matt Marchiori captured his first win of the season with seven saves in the full 90 minutes of action.Â

The Spartans will return to Oyen Field on Friday night, September 8th for a matchup against the Saint John's Johnnies out of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The game is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m.
