Box Score DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque women's volleyball team opened up American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) play on Wednesday evening as they faced-off against cross-town rival Loras College Duhawks. After both teams split through four sets, the match continued to a pivotal fifth set in which the Spartans would proceed to win the match improving to 12-4 overall and 1-0 in conference.
The Spartans would capture the opening set 25-17 behind 14 kills for an attacking percentage of 28%. Senior,
Emma Powell led the attack with six kills on 12 attempts (50%) while
Alexis Adkins provided the defense at the net with three block assists. Carrying momentum into the next set, the Spartans took a 2-0 lead as they won 25-20. A total of six different Spartans recorded kills in the second set.Â
The Duhawks did not shy away as they captured the next two sets forcing a match deciding fifth set. Quickly, the Spartans trailed 3-0 but regained the lead at 6-5. Halfway through the set, the Spartans used a 6-0 run to take a 12-7 lead. The Duhawks responded with a run of their own to force a match point as the Spartans trailed 15-14. Alexis Bedier,
Katie Wright, and
Ashlee Adler to secure the win 17-15.
A trio of Spartans finished the night with double digit kills led by Powell with 17, Adler with 13, and
Payton Uptagraft with 10. Setters
Ashlyn McGinnis dished out 29 assists while
Alexis Kammerer recorded 15 assists and three service aces. Defensively, Powell led with 25 digs followed closely by Adler with 24 and Wright with 21.Â
