WHEATON, Ill. - As their only road game of the week, the University of Dubuque men's soccer team traveled to Wheaton College home of the Thunder on Wednesday evening for a non-conference matchup. At Joe Bean Stadium, the Spartans were defeated by a score of 3-1.
Within the first three minutes of the game, the Spartans controlled possession as they tacked on three shots.
Carson Kowalski,
Jakub Youngstrom, and
Drew Wisdom each attempted a shot. In the 25th minute, the Thunder broke the scoreless tie as the Spartans trailed 1-0. Not long after, the Thunder took advantage of a Spartans foul and added to their lead with another goal heading into halftime with a 2-0 lead in favor of the Thunder.Â
Out of the break, the Spartans came out firing as Wisdom and
Marlon Kurth both had shots on goal but were saved by the Thunder goalkeeper. Neither team was able to produce any offense until the 74th minute. Junior,
Christian Campbell got the Spartans on the scoreboard with his first collegiate goal to cut into the Thunder deficit 2-1. After a few minutes, the Spartans had a chance to tie the game as Campbell recorded another shot along with
Zilfi Aliu but could not find the goal. In the last couple minutes of play, the Thunder added another goal as the Spartans lost 3-1.
The Spartans recorded12 shots on the night just one shy of the Thunder's 13. A total of 20 Spartans saw action in tonight's contest. Goalkeeper for the Spartans,
Matt Marchiori played the full 90 minutes and recorded three saves.Â

The Spartans will return to Oyen Field on Saturday, September 15th when they welcome in Carroll University. The game is scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m.
