Baseball Splits on Saturday, Coach Paul Wyczawski Collects 200th Win and Preps for A-R-C Tourney

INDIANOLA, Iowa - The final weekend of the regular season would finish with a split against the Simpson College Storm. UD will receive the #5 seed for next week's American Rivers Conference Tournament and will face the #4 seed Coe College in the opening game at Memorial Stadium at Kernels Field at 11 a.m. The Spartans lost the first game 4-5, but took the second game in a dominating fashion 13-1.

The victory was head coach Paul Wyzcawski's 200th win at UD and his team grabbed the fifth seed in next week's conference tournament. The two-tiime Coach of the Year, his first win for the Spartans was in 2013 and has coached his teams to an NCAA qualifying spot in 2018.

In the opener, UD scored four runs off 12 hits, but committed two errors. The host Storm, scored five runs off eight hits, but played errorless. Aidan Elfering took the loss after tossing six complete innings. He allowed three earned runs after facing 28 batters and struck out three. Noah Zoglman threw the final two innings and fanned one Storm batter and allowd just one hit after facing seven batters.

A quartet of Spartans finished with two hits. Jake Cekander went 2-4 with a run score, Cole DeStefanis went 2-4, Kyle Radi was 2-4 with a run scored, and Daniel Maller was 2-4 with an double RBI. Hinter Hicks finished with an RBI, Matt Wolverton added an RBI of his own, and Bo Karlson had one hit and an RBI.

In game two, the Spartans scored in six of nine innings and scored 13 runs with 12 hits and played errorless.The Storm were held to a single run after six hits and committed two errors. Aiden Sullivan threw six innings to collect the win. He faced 23 batters, struck out two, walked one and did not allow a run after four hits. Anthony Scanlon came in for relief and went two complete innings and struck out three, allowing two hits and one earned run. Derek Hardin pitched the final inning and forced two fly outs and a ground out.

Daniel Maller had the lone triple in the game and was 1-2 and scored four times with an RBI. Colin Husko had the hot bat and went 3-4, scored four times and had a pair of RBI's. Jake Cekander went 2-4 with an RBI. Matt Wolverton finished the game with two RBI's, Joe Unfer had two RBI's, and Cole DeStefanis had two RBI's after going 2-4 at the plate. UD left 13 runners on base in the victory. 

The University of Dubuque will be hosting the 2023 American Rivers Conference Tournament on May 11-13 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The schedule is listed below and begins on Thursdy, May 11 at two sites.
