CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) tournament kicked off today with all six teams in action. A total of five games were played today at Veterans Memorial Stadium and the Robert W. Plaster Athletic Complex. The University of Dubuque Spartans split today as they won the first game against #4 Coe and then lost the second game against the regular season champions #1 Buena Vista.
The first game at Veterans Memorial Stadium this afternoon began with the University of Dubuque Spartans and the Coe College Kohawks. The Spartans did not waste any time scoring in the new stadium as they plated one run in the top of the first.
Hunter Hicks singled into left field to drive in the game's first run as
Colin Husko came around to score. In the second inning, the Spartans scored three more runs on four hits.
Jake Cekander hit a sacrifice fly followed by a two out two run double from
Cole DeStefanis to take a 4-0 lead. Costly errors in the fourth allowed the Spartans to tack on two more runs extending the lead 6-0. The Kohawks started to mount a comeback as they platted four runs in the bottom of the fifth. But the Spartans were able to cling to a 6-4 lead throughout the remainder of the game to secure the victory.
Offensively, the Spartans collected 11 hits in which
Brandon Watkins,
Aidan Elfering, and DeStefanis each had two hits.
Edward Rosas earned the win as he tossed 7 1/3 innings only giving up five hits and no earned runs.
Derek Hardin entered in relief to record the save as he pitched 1 2/3 innings. Hardin made quick of the Kohawks as he did not give up a hit and struck out two.
In the second game for the Spartans they fell to the Buena Vista University Beavers by a score of 5-0. The Spartans gathered five hits but could not produce a run as the Beavers tallied six hits on five runs.

The Spartans advanced to the second day of the A-R-C Tournament and will take on the winner of #2 Luther or #4 Coe. The game is scheduled to start at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, May 12.
