CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Day two of the American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) Tournament at Veterans Memorial Field concluded with an elimination game as the #5 seed University of Dubuque Spartans took on the #2 seed Luther College Norse. The Spartans advanced into tomorrow with a 3-2 victory over the Norse.
Colin Husko began the game with a walk and then stole second base to get into scoring position. After Husko advanced to third base, head coach
Paul Wyczawski dialed up another steal as Husko headed for home. A close play at the plate resulted in a run for the Spartans as Luther's catcher dropped the ball. A stretch of scoreless innings occurred as neither team could figure out the pitchers. In the sixth, the Spartans tacked on two more runs without collecting a hit as Luther made three errors in the inning. Heading into the bottom of the ninth, the Spartans lead 3-0 as Luther was down to their final three outs. The Norse did not go down quiet, as a two out two run homerun over the left field fence brought the tying run to the plate. Luther followed up the big at bat with a single but
Anthony Scanlon would end the game as he recorded a fly out as the Spartans won 3-2.
On the mound
Aidan Elfering tossed a stellar outing earning himself the win. Elfering pitched 8 2/3 innings as he allowed two runs on seven hits while striking out seven. Scanlon came in the ninth to record his second save of the season.
The Spartans tallied seven hits in the win as six different players recorded a hit. At the plate Husko etched his name in the record books as he went 2- 4 today. With Husko's double in the top of the ninth, he has tied the single season school record for most hits in a season with 62.Â
