DUBUQUE, Iowa - The #20-ranked University of Dubuque Spartans dominated the visiting Nebraska Wesleyan University Prairiewolves in front of the loudest and largest crowd of the season on Thursday night by a 43-9 win.
Matches began at 141 lbs. and the crowd got involved early when
Jevontae Yarbrough collected the technical fall at the end of the first period after leading 16-1 as time expired. UD led 5-0 and never looked back.
Billy Looney (149) won by a fall early in the second period after a quick takedown and four-point nearfall. He accumulated over two minutes of riding time in the first period and stopped the match with a pin at 3:27.
Luke Radeke (157) kept the crowd on it's feet with a technical fall at the end of the second period after leading 18-1 (5:00).
Devinaire Hayes (165) led 4-2 after the first period. He grabbed an escape for the only point in the second period. Hayes scored in the third period on a two point takedown to earn a hard fought decision 7-4 to extend the Spartans team score 19-0. NWU scored their first win (174) in a 9-3 decision over
Thomas McCreadie to slice the team lead 19-3.
Pilo Perez (184) grabbed another Spartan fall when he made quick work of his opponent after a takedown and earned the win by fall in 1:49.
Tyler Thurston (197) extended UD's lead to 31-3 after winning by a fall as the clock expired in the second period (5:00), He led 2-0 in the first period before a flurry in the second when he scored a takedown and back-to-back four point nearfalls before the pin.
Darryl Aiello brought the crowd back to it's feet when a couple of quick throws and a takedown before a fall in 1:03 had the crowd cheering in it's loudest point of the night.
Tanner Higa (125) earned a fall in 1:54 after he scored a takedown and a pair of four-point nearfalls before stopping the match in the first period.
Jesus Sanchez (133) trailed 1-2 after the first period and lost by a fall in 4:19.
The schedule doesn't get any easier as #20-ranked UD will host #13-ranked Coe College Kohawks on Friday, Feb. 10 at 7:00 p.m. in Stoltz Sports Center on Senior Night.
