DAVENPORT, Fla. - The University of Dubuque baseball team continued their hot streak to open the season picking up their fifth straight victory on Tuesday 11-2 over the Cardinals of St. Mary's University.
Just like yesterday, the Spartans offense produced as they scored two in the opening inning off a
Kyle Radi single and a sacrifice fly from
Colton Pfeifer to give them a 2-0 lead. The Cardinals would even the score back up in the bottom of the first 2-2. The Spartans would recapture the lead in the fourth inning with three runs capped off by a
Parker Allen two run homerun. Allen has hit a homerun in back-to-back games.
In the top of the fifth, the Spartans would fly out the first two outs.
Hunter Hicks would then walk followed by a single from
George Pavlopoulos to have runners on first and second.
Daniel Maller would then draw a walk which would lead to a big hit from Allen has he tripled to score all three runners on base opening the game up for a 9-2 Spartans lead. With the game in hand, the Spartans would add runs in the seventh and ninth innings winning by a final score of 11-2.
Allen ended his day going 4-5 at the plate driving in five runs. The Spartans were able to record 16 hits in 40 plate appearances.
Aidan Elfering grabbed the win going six innings giving up two runs on six hits. Elfering walked one and struckout two.
Anthony Scanlon came in for relief the final three innings facing 14 batters giving up only two hits and striking out four.
The Spartans sit 5-0 to begin the 2023 baseball season.
