Baseball Defeats Albion 5-4, Remains Undefeated at 4-0

DAVENPORT, Fla. - The University of Dubuque baseball team remained undefeated on Monday afternoon after they took care of business against the Albion College Britons 5-4 behind a leadoff homerun by Parker Allen and a 4-4 batting day with four singles from senior, Cole DeStefanis

Allen would lead off for the Spartans in the first inning against the Britons and would send the ball over left center field fence to give the Spartans a quick 1-0 lead. The Britons would tie the game back at 1-1 in the top of the third before the Spartans would rally off three runs in the bottom of the inning to retake the lead 4-1. Each team would add a run in the fourth inning as the Spartans still held a two run advantage at 5-2. Pitching would settle down over the course of the next three innings as neither side gave up any runs heading into the eighth inning with the Spartans still leading by three runs. The Britons would come alive again in the eighth as they scored two runs with two outs with one coming off a Spartans throwing error trimming the lead to a single run at 5-4. The Spartans would get the final out to escape the top of the eighth still leading. The Spartans threatened to get their lead back to more than one run in the bottom of the eighth with the bases loaded and one out, but the Spartans would strike out in the final two outs. In the final frame, Derek Hardin was able to hold the Britons to zero hits and get the final three outs to start Spring Break 2-0 and a 4-0 record to begin the season.

Destefanis hit four singles in his four at-bats and three Spartans added two hits apiece. The Spartans ended the game with 12 hits, four errors, nine left on base, three walks, and 12 strikeouts. Edward Rosas got the call to start on the mound going six innings giving up two runs on seven hits and added five strikeouts getting the win for the Spartans. Hardin would get the save pitching the final three innings giving up two runs on two hits.
