WINONA, Minn. - The only game of the week for the University of Dubuque men's hockey team was on the road at Saint Mary's University (Minn.) where the Spartans and Cardinals fought until the very last whistle, but neither team could score in the overtime period to end in a 2-2 draw.
The Cardinals were able to score first 11 minutes into the game, but the Spartans would quickly have an answer on their offensive end as the combo of
Connor Nelson and
Brendan Erickson found
Lyncoln Bielenberg-Howarth for his first goal as a Spartan at the 14:39 mark of the first period knotting the game at 1-1.
In the second period, the roles were reversed as
Max Messier scored the second Spartans goal off assists from
Patrick Toomey and Erickson for his second assist of the night to give the Spartans a 2-1 lead. The lead would be brief as the Cardinals answered two minutes later to even the score once again at 2-2.
Neither team found a way to score in the third period and in the OT period as the Spartans record their second tie of the season.
Toomey had the most success on face offs tonight for the Spartans going 7-16 and led the team with seven total shots. Despite being out shot 27-49 by the Cardinals,
Dakota Meyer recorded 47 saves to help keep the Spartans close and helped them ultimately end in a tie in 65 minutes in goal.
