Women's Basketball Wins UW-Oshkosh Winter Classic Opener Versus Ripon

OSHKOSH, Wis. - The University of Dubuque women's basketball team traveled to the UW-Oshkosh Winter Classic for their holiday break tournament to play in two games this weekend. The Spartans battled Ripon College on Friday afternoon and was able to use a strong fourth quarter to win 53-48 in a low scoring defensive battle.

The Spartans struggled shooting the ball right out of the gate shooting 21.4% in the first quarter only making three field goals which ultimately found themselves trailing 9-16 after the first 10 minutes. The Spartans were then able to make Ripon struggle shooting the ball as they only scored eight points in the second quarter to only trail by one at the break.

In the third quarter both teams continued to shoot under 30% from the field as Ripon lead by three going into the final quarter of play. The Spartan shooters finally got going in the final 10 minutes as they shot 53.3% from the field outscoring Ripon by eight to win a close game.

Tabria Thomas nearly had half of the Spartans points with 20 on 6-11 shooting. She was also able to get to the free throw line often going 8-12. Felicity Figlinski was the other Spartan to score in double figures with 10 that included the only two three pointers made by the Spartans in the game. The leading rebounders for the Spartans were Karsen Kershner with nine and Megan Teal with seven.

Points off turnovers and second chance points played key roles in the Spartans win as they outscored Ripon by 10 points in both categories.

The Spartans move to 7-4 on the season and will play Rockford University tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. in the final game of the UW-Oshkosh Winter Classic.
