DUBUQUE, Iowa - After starting off the season with three straight road games, the University of Dubuque women's basketball team finally took the court inside the Stoltz Sports Center on Tuesday afternoon. The Spartans welcomed in the Prairie Wolves of Nebraska Wesleyan and secured their first conference victory with a convincing 70-41 win.
The Spartans held a five point lead (15-10) at the end of the first quarter as
Megan Teal hit a three in the Spartans final possession of the quarter. In the first two minutes of the second quarter, the Prairie Wolves regained the lead at 16-15. The Spartans responded with 14 unanswered points, their biggest run of the day to take a 29-16 lead. Freshman,
Felicity Figlinski would score the final five points for the Spartans as she connected on a mid-range jumper and then splashed a three as the Spartans entered halftime with a 34-19 lead.Â
The Spartans exploded offensively in the third quarter as they out scored the Prairie Wolves 24-7. From the field the Spartans were 8-15 (53%) and 3-7 from beyond the arc as
Makenzie Knapp connected on two threes and
Tabria Thomas also hit one. With 6:19 remaining in the fourth quarter the Spartans held their biggest lead of the game at 35 points en route to a 70-41 victory.Â
Two Spartans finished the day with double digit points as Thomas led the charge with 14 points followed by
Kaitlyn Powell with 12 points on 6-10 shooting and grabbing eight rebounds. Defensively the Spartans forced 25 turnovers as
Morgan Hawkins led the team with four steals and also snatched a team high 10 rebounds. A total of 14 Spartans saw the court in today's contest.Â
The Spartans improve their record to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
