Hawkins Named to Wheaton All-Tournament Team as Spartans Pick Up First Win of Season

WHEATON, Ill. - After the season opening loss yesterday, the University of Dubuque women's basketball team picked up their first win of the season over the Bethany Lutheran College Vikings 75-49. Morgan Hawkins was named to the Wheaton Beth Baker Classic All-Tournament team after her performances over the weekend. 

The Spartans got off to an early 5-0 lead before extending the lead to 11-3 with 5:55 to play in the first quarter. They would maintain a lead throughout the entire first, leading 19-15 after one. In the second, the Spartans would lead by as many as 15 in the quarter and found themselves leading 36-22 with 3:52 before halftime. However, the Spartans would finish the rest of the quarter scoreless as the Vikings went on a 10-0 run to get within 36-32 at the half. 

The Spartans would come out of the half and start turning up the heat offensively using a 14-0 run to extend their lead to 50-32. The Vikings didn't score in the third quarter until 4:26 remaining on the clock. The Spartans held the Vikings to only six points in the quarter. With a substantial lead, the Spartans were able to continue on the attack and use another 10-0 run to lead by 24 with under eight minutes to play. The Spartans led by as many as 27 points late and finished off the first Spartan win of the young season. 

Hawkins played 27 minutes scoring nine points and grabbing 10 rebounds. The junior was able to total 22 points and 19 rebounds on the weekend to earn all-tournament team honors. Samantha McDonald led all scorers with 21 points on a scorching 7-8 from the field including a perfect 7-7 at the charity stripe. The duo of Tabria Thomas and Madi Petersen added 14 points each and Megan Teal picked up her first double-digit scoring game with 10 on Saturday. 

The Spartans were able to get 20 steals in the game, led by Thomas with six who has now moved into 2nd in school history with 218 career steals. The Spartans led the points off turnovers battle with a 36-16 margin and dominated the points in the paint by a difference of 38 points. 

The Spartans are now 1-1 overall on the season

The Spartans will travel to Fond du Lac, Wisconsin on Wednesday, November 15 at 6:30 p.m. to take on the Marian University Sabres.
