ST. PETER, MInn. - The University of Dubuque men's hockey team scored two goals in their first collegiate varsity game for the Spartans. UD lost the hotly contested road contest 2-3 to the hosts, Gustavus Adolphus College Golden Gusties.
The hosts scored first at 14:47, just minutes later UD's
Tye Evans would score the Spartans first ever goal in hockey after assists from
Patrick Donnelly and
Max Messier on a power-play at 17:31 in the opening period to knot the game at 1-1. The Golden Gusties re-took the lead on a power-play with seconds left on the second period clock at 19:20, to lead 2-1. Coming out of the intermission, UD would score just :26 seconds into the third to equal the score 2-2.
Charles Levis tied the game after assists from
Alex Walsh and
Brendan Erickson. The hosts would rally back and score the game winner, late in the third period at 14:50. UD was 1-4 in goals during the power-plays and GAC was 1-5 in power-play chances. The two squads were both called for six penalties.
UD finished the night with two goals off 18 shots and the Golden Gusties scored three goals off 26 chances.
Charles Levis and
Ethan Lang led the Spartans with three shots each. The Spartans were 30-61 in faceoff attempts.
Thomas Gazich was 11-22 in faceoffs,
Patrick Toomey was 10-16 in faceoffs,
Tye Evans 5-12,
James Eng 3-9,
Patrick Donnelly 1-0, and
Max Erstad 0-1.
Chris Curr played all 60 minutes in goal and stopped 23 shots. UD fired 18 shots on the Golden Gusties and they would collect 16 saves.
UD will continue the weekend doubleheader at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday against the Golden Gusties in Lund Arena
