LEXINGTON, Ky. - The University of Dubuque women's volleyball team would lose a pair of games on Saturday in the final day of the Transylvania University tournament after sweeping two games yesterday. The Spartans faced College of Saint Benedict in the early morning game where they would lose in four sets (21-25, 15-25, 25-23, 27-29) and then would lose to host school Transylvania University in a nail-biting five set match (25-17, 25-23, 19-25, 16-25, 11-15) to finish the tournament with a 2-2 record bringing their overall record to 4-5 heading back to Iowa.
Game 1 vs College of Saint Benedict
The Spartans would fall behind early in the morning match against Saint Benedict as they would lose the first two sets before winning the third set by a slim margin 25-23 to force another set. The fourth set would be the best all around set for the Spartans as they had game-highs in kills (20) and attacking percentage (.269), but would fall in extras 27-29 to lose the opener on Saturday morning.
Emma Powell finished the game with 16 kills on 61 attacks (.213) to lead the Spartans. Powell finished with 16 digs as well.
Kaylynn Murray and Morgan Denbeste would be the assists leaders with 16 and 14 and the only Spartans reaching double figures in the category.
Alana McDermott finished with a game-high 20 digs.
Game 2 vs Transylvania University
In the last game of the tournament, the Spartans would flip what they did in the morning game as they would take the first two sets before Transylvania would grab the next two to force a fifth and final set. In the winner take all set, the Spartans would match Transylvania in kills with eight, but a few more errors would cost them as they would fall 11-15 in the final set to close out the tournament. Three Spartans reached double figures in kills with
Ashlee Adler (13),
Darby Hawtrey (12), and Powell (11). Adler would finish the game with the best attacking percentage of .258 on 31 attacks. As she did in the first game, Murray led in assists with 27.
Maegan Brylski added 13 assists.
Katie Wright led the team in digs with 25 and serve aces with five.
