DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque softball opened Saturday's doubleheader and made quick work of the Central College Dutch 9-1 in six innings. The Spartans would battle throughout the second game and would fall short in the final by a score of 9-11.
In game one, UD scored nine runs off 13 hits and committed three errors while the Dutch were held to a run off five hits and made one error. UD sluggers made an appearance once again with Lauren Brown hitting a homerun to centerfield in the second inning for two RBI's. Callie Dutton would homer in the fourth inning with a solo shot over left field. The Spartans ended the game with an additional five doubles. Brown would finish 3-4 at the plate with four RBI's. Dutton went 3-3 with a pair of RBI's. Dariann Diorio finished with two hits along with teammate Alyanna Martinez who grabbed two. The pair would finish with an RBI in the victory.
Kayla Breunig tossed a complete game allowing just five hits and one earned run to earn the victory after facing 26 batters.
In game two, UD scored nine runs with nine hits and made two errors. The Dutch scored 11 runs off 14 hits and made two errors. Deanna Origer was 2-3 at the plate along with Alyanna Martinez who finished with a 2-4 with an RBI in the batter's box. Rachel Trader led with two RBI's as designated player.
Megan Wolff suffered her first loss of the season after allowing seven earned runs in 5.2 innings. Breunig came in foe relief and pitched 1.1 innings and allowed just one hit.
The Spartans host Coe College on Wednesday, April 13 for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. Holy Week is a busy one for the Spartans with a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday, April 14 against Iowa Wesleyan University beginning at 3 p.m. and a road doubleheader at Nebraska Wesleyan University on Saturday, April 16 starting at 1 p.m. in Lincoln, Neb.
