WAVERLY, Iowa - The University of Dubuque baseball team started their three game series on the road against the Wartburg College Knights with a doubleheader today in which the Spartans would take a close game one 5-4 and the Knights snagged game two 7-12 after an eight run third inning. The split today moves the Spartans to 13-10 overall and 5-6 in conference play.
Game 1
The Spartans got on the board early in the top of the first after a strikeout dropped by the Wartburg catcher forced them to throw to first to get the out.
Hayden Iacolucci had other plans as he stole home from third and slid in safely to give the Spartans the early 1-0 lead. Wartburg would counter in the bottom of the third with two RBI singles bringing in three runs to put them on top 3-2. The Spartans added two runs in the top of the sixth and regained the lead 4-3 before adding an important insurance run in the top of the ninth off a
Kellen Mitchell pinch hit double to center field to lead 5-3. Wartburg got a run in the bottom of the ninth, but Mitchell's double was the difference in this one as the Spartans grabbed game one 5-4.
Shaun Logan went to the mound in the fifth inning and went four and a third innings allowing six hits and one earned run giving him the win.
Derek Hardin pitched the final two outs in the ninth and got the save.
Game 2
The Spartans were able to scratch a run across in the top of the first like game one and expanded their lead in the third with a two-run homerun by
Mitch Pomeroy that gave the Spartans a 4-1 lead after 2 1/2 innings. Wartburg then used a eight run bottom of the third inning rally to go from a 4-1 deficit to a 9-4 lead in a massive swing in game two. The massive inning led to be the difference as the Spartans tacked on a few more runs, but were unable to comeback as they fell in game two 7-12.
Jake Cekander continued his great day at the plate going 3-5 with one RBI.
Mitch Pomeroy went 2-4 including his two-run homerun in the top of the third inning. The Spartans collected 12 hits in the game and left seven on base.
Edward Rosas took the loss after only going 2.2 innings where he gave up seven hits and 8 runs (3 earned runs).
