WAVERLY, Iowa - The University of Dubuque baseball team trailed early in Sunday's game, but scored four runs in the seventh to tie the game at 4-4 against the Wartburg College Knights. The Spartans would strand five runners on base in the final three innings as the Knights opened with a leadoff double in the bottom of the ninth. A single advanced the runner to third. UD intentionally walked the next at bat to fill the bases. The next batter struck out swinging, before a single to center field ended the game in favor of the Knights.

UD scored four runs in 10 hits and committed three errors, as Wartburg scored five runs in 13 hits with an error. Three Spartans finished with two hits each and as a team UD collected six doubles. Kellen Mitchell went 2-4 with a pair of doubles and had 10 putouts and an assist. Cole DeStefanis went 2-4 with a pair of doubles and an RBI. Quincy Bryant was 2-3 with an RBI.

Jake Cekander started and threw five innings, allowing two earned runs and striking out two. Aidan Elfering took the loss after throwing 3.1 innings and allowing the game winning run after striking out four. The pair would walk just two batters on the day.

The Spartans host the Loras College Duhawks on Dan. W. Runkle Baseball Field on Tuesday, April 12 at 3 p.m. for a nine inning contest.
