DUBUQUE, Iowa - The University of Dubuque baseball team dropped a pair of American Rivers Conference games on Sunday to the Luther Norse by scores of 1-10, and 7-8.
Delayed by a day after the Dubuque area experienced a snowfall over four inches of snow, Sunday's games were moved up to an 11 a.m. start. It was a good call, as soon as the doubleheader finished the Dubuque area began experiencing rain. It looked like the Spartans were going to grab a split, until UD allowed four runs at the top of the ninth in game two and Luther earned the sweep. The Spartans allowed five runs in the top of the ninth in game one, the final inning was not the Spartans friend on Sunday.
The Spartans scored one run off four hits with three errors in game one, Luther scored 10 runs off nine hits and played errorless.
Max Snowden grabbed two hits and went 2-4 at the plate including the games only dounle in the bottom of the seventh.
Jake Cekander and
Jordan Goldstein grabbed the other two hits.
Edward Rosas took the loss after striking out five and facing 23 batters.
In game two, UD had seven runs in six hits and played errorless while the Norse finished with eight runs in 15 hits with an error. Luther took the early lead 2-0 in the top of the first. UD tied the game in the bottom of the third. The Spartans took their first lead in the bottom of four and would hold that to the top of the sixth. In the sixth, the Norse scored twice to tie the game and UD responded in the bottom of the sixth with two runs to capture the two run edge once again. UD added another run in the bottom of the seventh to stretch their lead to 7-3. Both teams were scoreless in the eighth and Luther began the ninth with four hits in a row before a double-play stopped some momentum. Luther would finish the inning with six hits, four runs and left three on base. UD would end the game with three strike outs.
The Spartans travel to play a single nine inning game against the Coe College Kohawks on Tuesday, April 5 at 3 p.m.
